Risk Management is becoming an increasingly important element in the way the Department of Transportation manages itself and regulates the various transportation industries. As are all government agencies, DOT is trying to find ways of utilizing its personnel and resources in more cost-effective ways. Risk management has provided some DOT organizations the ability to focus their compliance, inspection, and enforcement activities on those areas that are expected to have the biggest benefit for the resources expended. In addition, DOT is looking for ways to encourage the transportation industries it regulates to proactively search for innovative ways to reduce risks to the public and workers and protect the environment. Risk management can provide the flexibility to develop safety and environmental solutions that will produce greater reductions in risk for less cost than strict compliance with the existing regulations.
